Can you believe it?! I am 1/4 of the way to my lap goal of 10,000 laps!

Every time I hit a milestone I feel like I am just around the corner from achieving a dream.  This campaign has already brought so much conversation in the Burlington community that I have actually been approached 5 times to see how I am feeling and far I am along in my lap count.  I just have to say it warms my heart and inspires me to stay focused on my path.

My mind, body and spirit feel pretty amazing. My last botox treatment was in June 2017. I delayed my October treatment until November where I met with my neurologist to give her an update and she fully supported my approach to my dystonia wellness.  It has officially been 7 months with zero needles in me and the botox is fully out of my system!  Don’t get me wrong, there are times where my body is challenged but I try and have that awareness to honour my mind and body by slowing down, skipping the pool, eating well and resting.

A bit of mixed emotions over the month of January.  I am no longer swimming with the  TOEST team and have decided to swim under The Ontario Masters Swimmers at the upcoming swim meets focusing on building awareness for dystonia and the dystonia community as well as focusing on my lap goal.  This was a decision that was bittersweet but I needed to be honest with myself as well as with that organization as it just wasn’t the right fit.  That’s the thing about life, you never know why things happen but it all happens for a reason.

Having said that, I am incredibly happy to be swimming at the Burlington YMCA to my hearts content!  Already, I’ve received a warm welcome with open arms and such an out pour of support which really adds fuel to my swims.  I’ve got a pool, I’ve got a gym and more importantly I’ve got my family beside me as I train.

Upcoming events include:

  • Feb 4: Masters Swim Clinic with 2x Canadian Olympian Martha McCabe at the University of Toronto pool.
  • Feb 11: Burlington Splash Swim Meet, Burlington, ON
  • Feb 25: Stephen Forsey Invitational, Thornhill, ON

See you in the pool,

Sumbul Zafar
